Sipping from the Soup of Legends
Patscharaporn Distakul

Patscharaporn is an Offenbach based contemporary dance artist whose biography spans over two different continents and different cultures. Sipping from the Soup of Legendsexpresses her approach to Thai popular narratives and knowledge that are intertwined in Thais’ daily life as well as the process of relating to her ancestral roots as a female performer and a mother. The project is an attempt to collect, rediscover and tell stories which (unconsciously) have influenced the artist’s life. It is also an homage to some narratives that did not find its way into official history books and to the way of learning from verbally transmitted material. The artist invites the audience to enter the first sketch of a performance that tells about her way to evoke and reconnect to her ancestral knowledge that runs through her contemporary body.

Jury statement

As a dancer, Patscharaporn Distakul has worked with renowned companies and choreographers throughout Europe and has recently impressed audiences in the Rhine-Main region with her collaborations with Wen Hui and Fabrice Mazliah. With a biography that spans several continents, and trained in classical Thai dance, ballet and contemporary dance, the Offenbach native has a multi-perspective movement vocabulary.

In her first own choreography “Sipping from the Soup of Legends”, she explores Thai folk legends, rituals and practices and combines them with her contemporary female body. The jury is convinced of the relevance of the project and considers it an important step towards Distakul’s artistic development.
